Gun Hill Road Review-A Parents Hard Learned Lesson

Gun Hill Road
Saw the flick today at the screening and was interested in its content because I had been doing some prior research on the subject. Sometimes we perceive things differently and when we are more set in our ways, it takes more time to open ones self up to other possibilities. So in my own personal life I can attest that it took me a while to ‘come around’ so-to-speak especially easing up on my ignorant homophobic stance from the get-go.

I too, like Michael, had a father who’s job it was to instill a sense of masculine sexuality in his three sons having been a bomber pilot in WWII and forever wearing it on his sleeve. This role he cast for us in steel could have set up a lifetime of aversion and negative influence if not properly treated. A polarity had been set up for and anyone who didn’t adhere to this strict sense of identity in which he firmly believed.

We learn from birth about the roles we play first as children then later as adults. Most of these behavior patterns of ‘boys with trucks and girls with dolls’ are engrained into our psyche and hard to move or change. It’s when one is confronted with ‘being different’ that we really get our backs up against the wall.

Michael had grown away from his father’s stern upbringing and black and white outlook on life. His father Enrique is seen in this macho man tough guy role model that owns up to its image: fierce, strong, aggressive, violent, and straight and narrow where black is black and white is white. And never shall the twain meet. No gray areas are  allowed. He knows that to get respect in his present situation: incarceration, he must fight and uphold his tough image to survive in a total buck head to head environment. It’s the only way he knows how to survive and it works for him.

So he declares war on a fellow inmate to make a statement and to set a perimeter of understanding with a line drawn in the sand that is not negotiable. Not yet anyway.

The story has him being released from prison but he soon finds that life has not been on a three-year hiatus. His immediate family of wife and son has gone through some changes that he wasn’t there to experience and couldn’t possibly have imagined. He’s the odd man out. But even though he’s been away for three years, he wants his life back the way it was, everything back to normal. But what is normal for his son? And has his wife’s patience and celibacy run out, her sense of faithfulness stretched to the limits?

He keeps referring to Michael as his son, but he didn’t bargain for his behavior and cannot accept it because of how he was brought up and lived his whole life up until now. His outlook of an ideal man is one way only. He doesn’t see clearly when his son explores his feminine side and rejects most other earlier acceptable behavior patterns. In fact he sees red and is angered by this type of behavior in his son mostly because of how it reflects back on him. How will society judge him now when his only son is a turncoat adopting another perspective on his sexuality, namely transsexual which is so different than his own.

Michael wears his hair differently, seeks out hormone therapy to enhance and change and make his appearance more feminine and acceptable to a male suitor. He puts on makeup, jewelry, studies female behavior, softens his voice. He dresses as a girl every chance he gets but hides his alter ego deep inside a “Davy Jones's Locker.” He can only fully ‘come out’ at non-judgmental poetry readings, nightclubs, and at gatherings of his closest peers who swear allegiance to his secret.

He succeeds in his appeal to the opposite sex in his transition and finds temporary comfort in a sexual relationship that has no basis in love or respect. It is no different than any man lusting after a female for the conquest alone and nothing more. But Michael settles for what he can get for now until the stark realization dawns on him that this will never be anything else and he lashes out in despair.

Who will love him unconditionally and accept him for who he is now, other than his mother and God? His father shows only an unreasoning desire to avoid that which displeases, annoys, & offends him personally.

Society dictates that a transsexual who is passable has sexual value to be realized in the selling of sexual favors or in the case of the entertainment factor as is evidenced by a common practice of the rise in the popularity of transsexual pornography. Healthy relationships are reliant on understanding accepting individuals.

Since this behavior is the path of least resistance to financial independence for those transgender individuals who otherwise cannot admit to anyone in their immediate environment as to whom they really are, find gainful employment in their transition, some more passable transgender adopt this otherwise seemingly last option. Escorting has become popular as well as evidenced by the advertisements in websites such as Backpage.com and Craigslist.

Michael has found himself trapped in a man’s body and considers the options of hormone therapy and (transgender or transsexual women) undergoing sex reassignment surgery by doing research. His body parts don’t match what he feels is his true sexuality. But he doesn’t want the transition to become too obvious to those he can’t trust especially his father.

Everything Enrique remembered about his son was masculine in nature; baseball, football, interest in girls, walking with a swagger, talking in a deeper voice. He feels he can rescue him by forcing expected manly behavior patterns of yesterday to the extent of subjecting him to a female prostitute and physically cutting his hair. But it won’t change what has already transpired in Michael’s head and heart.

Michael is fortunate in that he does have a small support group made up of his contemporaries from school. But at the same time he is ridiculed and hassled by ignorant haters in the locker room. Conversely he is determined to live by what his heart and head dictates going as far as using the girl’s bathroom in school.

And on the political front:
And I quote:

‘LOS ANGELES, July 14, 2011–Despite pressure from anti-LGBT extremists, Governor Jerry Brown stood up for truth and accuracy in education by signing into law Senator Mark Leno’s Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act. The passage of FAIR Act (SB48) means that California schools must no longer exclude the historic contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.
In response to this important victory, L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center CEO Lorri L. Jean issued the following statement:

“We’ve seen it over and over; too many LGBT youth are harassed and bullied in schools at the hands of those whose fear and hate stems from ignorance about LGBT people.
It’s vital that all students learn about the great LGBT trailblazers who went before them—many of whom have been inexcusably closeted by our history books. When all students learn about the work and lives of such notable figures as Barbara Jordan, Bayard Rustin, Alexander the Great, Tennessee Williams, Walt Whitman, Billie Jean King and so many others, they should understand the historical context of their accomplishments, including how their sexual orientation or gender identity informed their work and shaped their character.
Right-wing extremists will crow that teaching children that LGBT people exist, and always have, is some type of ‘indoctrination’, but in fact it just means they’re learning the truth. And that is what education is all about. Governor Brown, thank you for standing up for all of our state’s young people by ensuring they are given accurate information, and not an incomplete version of history that erases the contributions of LGBT people.
The Center is working with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to make our public schools safe and welcoming for today’s young LGBT people. Giving students accurate, fairly presented information about LGBT people who have shaped history is another important part of making their lives better.”
Last month, the Center and LAUSD held a summit to develop a plan of action for fighting LGBT youth suicide and reducing homophobia in the nation’s second-largest school district. The initiative, called Project SPIN (Suicide Prevention Intervention Now), is also supported by many community partners.

Unquote”

So there is progress as we watch Michael’s transition and sympathize with his plight. Will it ever get better? Will he continue to be persecuted by his own blood? How will he finally fit in? His father finally gets struck by lightning when his wife reads him the riot act. ‘Find my son or else’. She means it with every breath she takes and fiber in her body. A house had to fall on him for him to finally get it. But is it too late?

He makes the ultimate sacrifice to find Michael above all else; even forgoing a do or die check in with his probation officer. He succeeds in finding Michael and finally begins to accept him for what he has become. But it is too late. He fought the law and the law won. He is tracked down and caught up by the same kind of belligerence and disregard for the law that got him locked up in the first place.

We see the pain, suffering and complete breakdown of communication that parents go through with their children. They can be lazy, non-productive, rebellious, and uncooperative. But when all is said and done, a middle ground must be achieved if any kind of order can be attained in the parenting process. The relationship between child and parent is an ebb and flow tide. The age difference, each’s perspective, the responsibility of the parent, not always seeing eye to eye. The parent must make hard choices and keep the child safe at all costs, doing what is in the best interest of the child.

But Michael’s relationship with his parents is different and not to be perceived as negative, getting into trouble, stealing, truancy, etc.
Michael otherwise is an intelligent wisdom seeking child, doing well in school and showing interest in growing up and just being a kid.

This film addresses many of the breakdowns in the family relationship but solutions must be attained in each individual case study. We must see this motivating movie as a positive learning experience. Let’s hope it aids in the understanding of this phenomenon in today’s society for the individuals who need it the most and not just for entertainment purposes.

This is just another story in the naked city.

My B Movie

Bees do bite when you try to excavate them from their natural site. I know they weren’t on my property when I moved in, but they were here first. Long before us here on earth, that is.

They decided to move into the rafters of my back porch ceiling a few years ago. And just who am I to argue with a bee and its stinger? And me being an true animal lover by nature, I didn’t want to harm a stinger on their chinny chin chin. So I felt I’d leave well enough alone in order to live and let live. Besides they weren’t bothering me, were they?

One day my attitude changed when I became the proud owner of a large sophisticated GrillPro Grill
for great grilling and BBQ in this fun summer sun. So it was time to consider evicting my tiny little busy buzzy friends. You see they liked to eat as much as I and they became a nuisance nosing around my chicken, ribs and steak.

But how? Not a cakewalk by any means, or even a honey walk. But I decided to get help in this by no means small easy task of relocating the hive from under thick building material, cutting through it with saws, and finally moving them safely to their new habitat without harming them in the least little bit.

After doing some research about the nature and state of honeybees
in the world, I came to realize that most people just want them removed. They have neither the desire, knowledge, experience or patience to deal with or care for the bees in the proper manner. So they opt for the easy way out of hiring an exterminator and just 'taking them out' so-to-speak, and not for a ride in the park. They are sprayed with serious chemicals to annihilate them; having them one-minute bee a pest of sorts and the next bee gone.

But at the same time, the honeybee is becoming extinct for reasons unknown to even our best scientists. Since they are in somewhat of a fragile state and are considered an essential part of our very human existence concerning food, I wanted to do my part and help save the bees. So I did what any red blooded American would do, I placed on ad on Craigslist and got a few calls from bee enthusiasts and even a conservationist or two. They informed me that there would be cutting involved because it sounded to them like the bees had really commandeered a spot beneath the wall and they weren’t moving any time soon. I had no idea just how involved it would become.

They also informed me that there would be no charge to remove the bees but that I would have to shoulder the responsibility of repairing any damage they caused in removing the bees. I said I could live with that partly because the bees were in an area of the house of minor importance under a back parch and who was I not to embrace a little inconvenience for the survival of mankind?

So the bee ‘relocator’ as they are referred to, showed up with trucks and gear and bee outfits. We discussed their duties and it seems they extract the bees for the purpose of relocating the whole nest to other areas with their workers and queen intact in order to preserve their species and keep them pollinating. They use methods that are proven and tested and these two guys happened to be originally from Albania. They really appreciate their bees there I understand.

So since this was to be a live extraction, which I was more than happy about because it’s a sin to kill and besides bees perform such a useful function in the food chain. Honeybees being on the decline didn’t surprise me with all the pollution and other abuse we have cast upon the earth.

At the beginning they transported the necessary gear and clothing closer to the bee site in the yard, from a truck out on the street in front of the house. This action would insure a safe and successful operation. They also used a ‘smoker’ to be used in guiding the bees where they wanted to them to go, making them more docile, tricking them into eating the honey thinking they are experiencing a fire and need to flee. After their initial suiting up, being completely caped head to toe in their white bee outfits with a screen over their heads, they climbed their ladders as if to mount the space station for a flight around the moon.

They set out in their task of cutting into the ceiling with electric saws and exposing at least a quantity of at least 13 different honey combs all aligned perfectly in a row between two 2x4 beams. It was quite amazing to me and they went about their business of carefully cutting the combs even while the bees were still clung to them. They cut one at a time, one doing the cutting, the other taking it down and lying it on a large metal pan.

The older man seemed to be more experienced than the other so they were doing the job that best suited them. Their division of labor was very consistent and I assumed that was to avoid making mistakes or having accidents. They continued to cut until the job was almost half done. They took a break and I can see that the kind of intense labor warranted a break time. They actually stepped around the side of the house, out of the path of the bees and took off the bee suit for the time being. All the while they had systematically placed the bees onto trays that fit neatly into wooden boxes. These would be covered and transported to the truck.

Besides having the ‘right stuff’ to be able to remove the bees, they came with cans designed to create real smoke to ‘smoke them out’ as they say. This procedure is very effective as the bees don’t smoke at any age and it is highly bothersome to them without actually killing them.

So as they continued their mission by donning their coveralls with a zip-on veil and elasticized cuffs, heading back to the second and final phase of bee relocation, I began to prepare as well. This wasn’t just your run of the mill beehive; it was a serious developed colony over several years, with many thriving honeycombs in just over a 2 feet area in the ceiling of my back porch.

Myself being a producer, I thought I would need to capture this personal experience on video for the entire world to share. I had no clue about what kind of resistance I would encounter.

I chose to wear a hooded jacket, long pants and shoes, but was that going to be enough? And did I choose the wrong color being red? I didn’t realize the bees could come out fighting mad at my choice of colors like a raging bull horning towards a nervous matador. We would find this out over the course of the extraction. I went and got my Panasonic AG-DVX100A 3-CCD 24p Mini-DV Camcorder, and began to videotape them performing their bee removal.
I had a few issues with lighting, as it was a bright sunny day. But under the back porch was shadowed except for what light reflected from the sky. So I adjusted the camera iris to let more light in when I was shooting a close-up of the hive itself. But let it open up when I was doing a two shot of them both working together because I had zoomed out for that. I also took photos so I was switching cameras from video to my Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3-Inch LCD and EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens. But still had the same issues with light so I engaged the flash because I was taking mostly close-ups, as you will see here.
I had shot for a while without much resistance but I didn’t realize matters would soon get out of hand. You see the bees were signaled by the fact that were all stepping on the dead ones that was releasing some kind of scent that triggered the bees that their brethren were under siege. And that is where I ran into some serious trouble. Every minute or so, as I was as close to the beemen as possible, the bees would land on my head which was covered. But it was still unnerving just the same.

Just hearing that buzzing so close to one’s head can send you running. But I was told that any kind of motion would just make them madder and they would be more motivated to attack and sting. But that’s great when you are dressed in full cover and they can’t possibly do you any harm. They were swarming seriously now as their habitat was being attacked in their way of thinking. So they wouldn’t stop landing on me and my solution was to retreat inside the back door and swat the bees off that had been persistent and wanted to burrow through my clothes.

So this action continued for about ten times until I realized there was no way the bees were going to let up on me. But I was still shooting my B Movie and wanted to get it all as they were beginning to wind down now. There wasn’t much time left but I had to shoot the end.

Well needless to say I got stung but good. They hit me a few times in my face, once on my neck and once on the ear, which can be very painful, because it is on a flat surface. Don’t try this at home or the office; let the professionals handle it. I considered my own TV show ‘The Bee Documentary’ but quickly shredded that script into the trash once I felt how painful and irritating several bee stings can be. Again I hope they pay these wild life experts well who go out in the bush; up and down waterways wrestling fish and catching alligators. I’ll relegate to them and just watch on television now with a whole new sense of respect, believe me.

So that was my first and hopefully last experience in the bee world. My stings took a week to go down, as they were very swollen depending on where they got me. Seven stings in all and I’ve got the scars to prove it. Oh and the video of course with stills which you can enjoy from the privacy and safety of your own computer. See Ya.

Check out the racks of clothes at this locale:

Here were the general run down on celebrities there in chronological order of interviews.

Lets' start with the main diva of style here 'Brenda Cooperwww.brendacooper.com
She is all that and a hand bag and shoes to boot. She put her two cents in and kicked off the festivities with this video:
Oh just in case you didn't know, that's not a photoshop effect, that's Brenda's sis on the right, Brenda to the left.

Karen David has appeared in several feature films including Flight of Fury and The Colour of Magic, and appeared as the female lead in The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior. Lets' hear what she had to say:

Jennifer Bini Taylor is an American actress born in New Jersey, best known for her role as Charlie Harper's fiancée Chelsea Christine Melini on the TV series Two and a Half Men had this to say:

Jasmine Dustin was there and took home a gift bag some serious celebrity spotting here also:

Next we spoke to Jordan Johnson, an American film and television actor and model. He brought his philanthropist self along to the opening:

A very attractive Joselyn Pennywell who also tried a few of the Anat B collection, and was a contender on the Television show 'America's Top Models' said this:

Marisa Lauren can be seen on 90210 and is a very talented singer, model and actress. She also took time from her busy schedule to support breast cancer and make an appearance at the Anat B Century City Mall store opening.

This is the very positve and effective public relations firm handling the event tonight:

I met a really cute mannequin, she was modeling different outfits, so she said she'd trade some photos I shot for her portfolio in exchange for some inside information. I'm still waiting to hear from her since I already gave her photos on a CD. Fat chance I'll hear from her again. Probably modeling in Alaska somewhere, she seemed really cold. Like a block of ice, know what I mean?

And last but not least is our illustrious hosts: 'Anat B' and her husband Ben. Great examples of how to dress and how to throw a killer store opening. Complete with photograhers, the media, models, giveaways, special guest stars and a cast of threads to die for.
